Special Services

We hold a variety of special services throughout the year as below. Please see our calendar which shows what is taking place.

Ash Wednesday

Marking the start of the season of Lent, this service calls us to dedicate ourselves afresh to the service of God.

Palm Sunday

In Widford, we welcome the choir of St John the Baptist, Great Amwell, to lead us through “The Way of the Cross” – a series of hymns, anthems and Bible readings and prayers focussing upon the arrest, trial and death of Jesus.

Maundy Thursday

Sometimes a Holy Communion, sometimes a thought-provoking “Service of Shadows”.

Good Friday

We hold a reflective meditation with hymns and Bible readings to mark this most solemn, yet most wondrous of days.

Easter

A great celebration of the resurrection of Christ from the dead – the heart of the Christian faith.

Ascension

We remember that Christ is not only risen, but now seated at God’s right hand as King of kings!

Harvest

In early October, we come to give thanks for God’s provision of food to eat and remember with gratitude all those who are involved in the supply chain. We usually take an additional collection for the Bishop of St Albans’ Harvest Appeal which supports a specific overseas project overseen by one of the world’s largest Christian aid agencies, e.g. TEARFund or Christian Aid.

Remembrance

We hold special services on Remembrance Sunday which include an Act of Remembrance and two minutes silence. We take an additional collection for the work of the Royal British Legion.

Advent

On Advent Sunday, we begin to look forward to the celebration of Christmas and we remember Christ’s promise to return again.

Blue Christmas

For some people, especially those who are bereaved, Christmas can be sad. This service is an opportunity to give thanks for and remember those we have loved who will not be sharing Christmas with us this year.

Carols by Candlelight

In Widford and Wareside, under candlelight, we sing traditional carols together and hear readings from the Bible which tell the Christmas story.

Carols Old and New

At Hunsdon, we sing some of the best of the traditional carols along with some new Christmas songs and hymns which bring the Christmas story to life in a fresh way.

Midnight Worship

A service at Hunsdon at 11pm on Christmas Eve which finishes just as Christmas Day begins.

Christmas Day

Our Christmas Morning Family Service (in Widford) is always full as the community gathers for a joyful celebration of what God has done in coming to earth as one of us.

Others

We are always alert to other important events and pleased to mark them with a special act of worship.
